REGULATION OF THE SYXTH INTERNATIONAL YURI BASHMET VIOLA COMPETITION
1.GENERAL CONDITIONS
1.1. The Sixth Yuri Bashmet International viola competition (further – «Competition») is held with the purpose of further development of the best traditions of the Russian musical culture and performing art, to support and encourage the young gifted viola players from different countries, to promote the development of their creative works, to facilitate the rich sources of the viola and to enlarge the viola repertoire.
1.2. The founders of the Sixth Yuri Bashmet International viola competition: Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, Russian Concert Agency.
1.3. The Competition is to be held in Moscow on the basis of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire from January 24th till February 1st, 2010.
1.4. The Organizing Committee of the Competition if formed by the founders. The Organizing Committee confirms the plan of the preparation and fulfilment of the estimate of expenditure, carries out the control of all arrangements, affirms the Jury Board and the symbol of the Competition (brochures, diplomas etc).
1.5 «The Russian Concert agency» organizes the Competition in the main aspects – financial, material and technical ensuring, personnel and informative selection and also co-operations with the founders and mass-media.
1.6. The Competition jury is formed from the most prominent Russian and foreign musicians in the field of chamber music, and other outstanding representatives of Art and Culture.
1.7. The artistic director, chairman of the Organizing Committee and Jury Board Chairman – Yuri Bashmet – People`s Artist of USSR, professor of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire.
2. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
2.1. The competition is open to musicians of all nationalities who are between the ages of 16 and 40 inclusively.
2.2. Applications deadline is December 1st, 2010.

a) photocopies of birth certificates and passports;
b) certificate of musical education copy;
c) creative biography of the participant resume;
d) a recommendation letter from music institution, music college or from two prominent musicians;
e) two photographs of the 13 x 18cm size and two photographs of 4 x 6ñì (signed on the back side).
2.4. The application forms are to be typed by computer or written in capital letters in Russian, English or German.
2.5. The Organizing Committee will send notification of admission status to all applicants no later than December 5d, 2010. All applicants admitted to the Competition will receive an official invitation and proposed date of arrival.
2.6. The registration fee equivalent to 20 USD for each Russian resident and the resident of the UIC countries and 50 USD for each foreign applicant is to be inserted to the Organizing Committee on arrival before the drawing of lots. The applicants have to pay the registration fee in cash (in roubles according to the official rate of the Central Bank of Russia).
2.7. In event of withdrawal from the competition, the documents and application fee will not be returned.
2.8. After the registration and the drawing of lots all changes in the announced programme of the applicants will be possible as an exception in case of the jury consent.
3. ÑOMPETITION PROCEDURES
3.1. The Competition will be held in four rounds – three preliminary rounds and one final. All competition rounds are open to the public. The pieces noted in the par. 1a, 2a and also B.Bartok and Walton- Concertos for Viola and Orchestra (par. 4b) are to be performed by heart.
3.2. The order of appearance of the performers will be decided by drawing of lots and will be kept to the end of the Competition.
3.3. The jury reserves the rights to shorten the programme or to stop the performing in case if the time-limit is not observed or the results of performing are obvious for the jury.
3.4. No more than half of the participants will be admitted to the second round.
No more than half of the contestants of the second round will be admitted to the third round.
No more than six participants will be admitted to the final.
Contestants not admitted to the final round will receive a diploma for participation in the third round.
3.5. The final allocation of prizes and awards will be held during the last session of the jury.
4. SELECTION AND PROGRAMME PERFORMING
4.1. The Organizing Committee will provide the rehearsal classes and one rehearsal (duration 15 minutes) before each round on the stage where the performing will take place.
4.2. The contestants are allowed to bring their own accompanist and the ensemble partner. It must be indicated in the application form. In case of necessity the Organizing Committee will provide the ensemble partner and the accompanist for performing with piano or ensemble. (Indicate in the application form)
4.3. Applicants have to indicate in the application form of performing J.S.Bach and W.A.Mozart in authentic manner. Otherwhise the Organizing Committee will not be able to guarantee the appropriate instrument for the accompanist (harpsichord etc.)
4.4. During the second round all the contestants have to perform the test piece for the Viola Solo (duration 4-5 minutes). Music of the test piece will be sent to the contestants on receiving the application forms, no earlier than September, 1, 2009.
5. FINANCIAL ÑONDITIONS
5.1. The Organizing Committee reserves exclusive right to record and broadcast all competition’s Rounds, as well as concluding gala, on radio, television, video and audio tapes. The same rights apply to the sales of the above materials in Russia and abroad. No fees will be paid to participants.
5.2. The Organizing Committee will provide and pay for the accomodation of the contestants and their accompanist and the ensemble partner (not more than one for each contestant) in the hostel of the Moscow Conservatoire during the period of participation in the competition: from the day of arrival to Moscow, not earlier than the fixed date and not more than one day after the completion of the last round that the contestant took part in. The hotel accommodation may be provided at the expense of the participants.
5.3. Contestants and their accompanists and illustrators arrived to the competition and refused to perform will bear all expenses during their stay in Moscow. In case of non-professional performance the Jury has the right to exclude the contestant from further participation before the official announcement of the round results. Contestants not admitted for the second, Third or Fourth rounds are able to stay in Moscow till the end of the Competition on their own account.
5.4. Organizing Committee has no obligations regarding any kind of insurance.
5.5. Organizing Committee has no obligations regarding the accompanying persons.
5.6. The application signed by the contestant testifies that the contestant accepts present conditions.
6. PRIZES AND AWARDS
6.1. The Organizing Committee of the Fifth Jury Bashmet International viola competition awards the following prizes:
- Grand Prix - 15.000 USD
- First Prize - 10.000 USD
- Second Prize - 6.000 USD
- Third Prize - 4.000 USD
Special Prize «For the best performance of the Russian composer’s piece» - 1000 USD (according to the results of the Second round – part A) for performing:
- D.Shostakovitch - Sonate op.147 bis for viola and piano
- F.Druzhinin - Sonate for viola solo
- A.Golovin - Sonate – breve for viola and piano
- N.Roslavetz - one of the Sonates for viola and piano
Special Prize «For the best performance of A.Shnittke Concerto» – 1000 USD (according to the results of the competition)
Special Prize «For the best ensemble» – 1000 USD (according to the results of the competition)
Special Oleg Kagan’s Prize «For the best performance of the Symphony Concertante by Mozart» - 1000 USD
Special Lucano Berio Prize from the Italconcert Agency «For the best performance of the 20th century composer’s piece» (according to the results of the competition) – 1000 USD
Special Prize «For the best illustrater (accompanist)» – 500 USD
L.Tertis ‘s Special Prize from the Organizing committee of the International Viola L.Tertis Competition.
6.2. The prizes will be presented in rouble equivalent in accordance with the existing rules and regulations of the Russian Federation and the rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the day of payment. (with deduction of the income-tax)
6.3. The Jury reserves the rights to:
- not to award some prizes;
- to divide prizes between the contestants.
- To redistribute the sum of Prizes within the financial limits.
6.4. The decision of the Jury at every stage of the competition is final and is not subject to question, review or appeal.
6.5. State and public institutions, creative unions, mass-media, firms and private persons may be the founders of special prizes and awards.
6.6. In case of controversy over the present conditions the Russian text is to be regarded as the only valid one.
